Poor Theatre Series
There are poor theatres everywhere. Poor theatre challenges an artist to draw on his imagination to get around or find new ways to overcome the lack of actual resources.
Our very own Poor Theatre Series has been around for 10 years, and we marvel at the diversity of the work we’ve had. From an integrated staging of Genet and Pinter in The Waterloo Murders, to evocative devised work like wu jun ru and you and me and him, Catman and By The Way, and quirky movement theatre in pieces like Play Play and Objects of Desire. These have all delighted both critics and audience alike for its raw intimacy and back-to-basics theatrics.
People around the world love poor theatre too! Productions from our Series have toured cities including Tokyo, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macau and Darwin.
We hope to keep the Poor Theatre Series going: to tighten our belts, focus our energies, and create honest theatre of true quality. We also hope that the series will broaden our scope, and develop into a platform for our emerging artists.
So we invite you to come with an open mind, have a seat in this slightly stuffy studio, and wait and see what happens next.
Join us in this priceless adventure.

Opening the Kuo Pao Kun Festival 2012 is 11, a deconstructed-then-reassembled performance pieced together from 17 of Kuo’s most poignant works. Taking the helm of the creative process is promising Director Liu Xiaoyi who will lead 10 young performers over a rigorous four-month rehearsal and training exercise. Their work draws strongly from Kuo’s scripts as the starting point for their creative exercise. More importantly, it will initiate a dialogue between Kuo and the youth in theatre today. This site-specific performance will take place within Stamford Arts Centre, the place that was once Kuo’s office and rehearsal space.

Inspired by Kuo Pao Kun’s Spirits Play
A mother lingers in the underworld, waiting for her son who has gone missing during a democratic uprising. A stranger who seems to hold all the answers suddenly appears. From the standpoint of their nationalities, creators and performers Hung Chit Wah (Hong Kong) and Hung Pei Ching (Taiwan) attempt to redress the violence behind the historical events of June Fourth and 228 Incidents. Using Kuo Pao Kun’s Spirits Play as a starting point, the pair first created The Mother Hen Next Door in 2010, when it won the highest accolades in the Taipei Fringe Festival. It was also nominated for the 9th Taishin Arts Award (Performing Arts).
